In 1982 she founded "Literaturhandlung" in Munich, a world-wide unique bookshop for literature about Judaism with branches, amongst others, in Berlin. She is also the author of several books on Jewish history.
Dr. Rachel Salamander was publisher of the “Literarische Welt” from September 2001 to September 2013. From October 2013 to September 2014 she was director of the F.A.Z. Literaturforum and chair of the jury of the „Marcel-Reich-Ranicki-Preis für literarische Kritik und Essay“.
Since 10th December, 2015 she has been member of the supervisory board of the Berlin based Suhrkamp Publishing House.
