1982 – 1988: Studies in Political Science, Journalism and Jewish Studies at Ludwig-Maximilian University, Munich, M.A. with a thesis on “The Reparations Question: Relations between the German Democratic Republic and Israel between 1945 and 1988“.
1989 – 1991: Research Assistant to Professor Arthur Hertzberg, Columbia University, NY
1992: Ph.D in Political Science, Jewish Studies and Contemporary History at the University of Armed Forces (Supervisor Professor Michael Wolffsohn) with a thesis on: “The Relations between American Jewish Organizations and the Federal Republic of Germany since 1945“, sponsored by a grant of Volkswagen Foundation.
1992 – 2005: Near East correspondent for Die Woche and various German, Swiss and Austrian magazines.
Since 1994: Lecturer at the Stanford Study Center, Berlin. Visiting Professor at Stanford University, Department of German Studies in 2004, 2007 and 2012.
Since 2008: Editor-in-chief of Internationale Politik, editor-in-chief of Berlin Policy Journal (since 2015), both published by the German Council on Foreign Relations.
