Nearly 70 participants from 20 countries, in addition the same numbers of young journalists, guests and reporting journalists, took part at the M100 Sanssouci Colloquium which invited leading media- and opinion-makers, historians and political organisation representatives to discussions at the Orangery Palace in Sanssouci, Potsdam for the 12th time. After the election of Donald Trump as US president and the  upcoming elections in Austria, France, the Netherlands and then in Germany end of September the results of the discussions at M100 are up to date as never.

M100 Young European Journalists will report live from the conference.

On September 15, about 70 international participants from the spheres of media, politics and academia will discuss the topic “War or Peace. The return of geopolitics, disintegration and the radicalisation of society in Europe” at the M100 Sanssouci Colloquium.

Not only will certain parts be streamed live on Facebook, M100 Sanssouci Colloquium will be reporting live from the conference as well. For that matter, participants of the M100 Young European Journalists Workshop (M100YEJ) will create a Live Blog to cover the conference, monitor social media and thus, bring the conference to a wider audience.

The M100 Young European Journalists workshop will start this Saturday at the MedienInnovationszentrum MIZ Babelsberg and teaches the young journalists not only the purposes, techniques and challenges of investigative journalism, but as well how to cover live from conferences. For that matter, M100 Sanssouci Colloquium is collaborating with Sourcefabric, a nonprofit open source development organisation that specialises in providing innovative software solutions for editorial newsrooms. With Sourcefabric’s solution for liveblogging, the Live Blog, the participants will be covering the M100 YEJ workshop on a daily basis and report live from the M100 Sanssouci Colloquium.

The M100 Young European Journalism workshop (M100YEJ) has been initiated in 2005 to promote the afore-mentioned values as well as ethical standards in journalism.
Longtime supporter is the organisation European Youth Press (EYP). The successful collaboration between EYP and the M100YEJ is now in its 10th year and is building the base for quality journalism and sparking conversations about the modern journalism among young media professionals. Both organisations share the same values of educating young journalists about media ethics, work environment and modern challenges journalists face within the profession.

The EYP is a network of youth media organisations in Europe. With 27 member organisations and several Committees, the EYP reaches more than 60,000 young journalists across Europe, forming a solid volunteer and professional infrastructure. It is a democratic, non-profit institution, founded and controlled by young media makers, all between 20 and 30 years of age.

Orangelog, the former platform of the European Youth Press, was initiated as a project emerging from the M100 YEJ workshop in 2006 and laid the foundation to the Orange Magazine, the English-language event-based online magazine of EYP that brings together an international team of young journalists from Europe and beyond.

1 September, 2016. In two weeks from today, leading media professionals and opinion leaders will meet for the 12th time for the M100 Sanssouci Colloquium at the historical Orangery of Sanssouci in Potsdam. Selected parts of the conference, including the Special Talk with Can Dündar and Kai Diekmann, as well as the presentation of the M100 Media Award to Roberto Saviano will be streamed live on Facebook to a broader audience.

Potsdam, 25 August, 2016. Today, in exactly three weeks, on September, 15th, the international media conference M100 Sanssouci Colloquium will take place for the 12th time in Potsdam.

About 70 participants from the spheres of media, politics and academia are expected to gather together to discuss the topic “War or Peace. The return of geopolitics, disintegration and the radicalisation of society in Europe”.

Glamorous conclusion of the event will be the conferment of the M100 Media Award to the Italian witer and journalist Roberto Saviano. The political keynote will be delivered by Federal Chancellor Dr Angela Merkel. The laudation will be held by Giovanni di Lorenzo, editor-in-chief of DIE ZEIT.

M100 Media Award to be presented to Roberto Saviano in evening ceremony

Potsdam, 23 August 2016. Can Dündar, who stepped down as editor-in-chief of the liberal Turkish newspaper Cumhuriyet last week, will be interviewed by BILD publisher Kai Diekmann on 15 September at the M100 Sanssouci Colloquium. The conversation will take place in cooperation with Reporters Without Borders, which has provided intensive support for Dündar and his wife for more than a year and a half.

Dündar and Cumhuriyet’s Ankara bureau chief, Erdem Gül, were sentenced to a lengthy prison term by a Turkish court of first instance as a result of their 2014 reporting on secret Turkish arms deliveries to Islamists in Syria. After the Turkish public prosecutor initiated criminal investigations against them, President Tayyip Erdoğan personally added charges on suspicion of espionage in May 2015, and demanded life sentences for both journalists. In November 2015, Dündar and Gül were imprisoned. However, they were subsequently freed following three months of pre-trial detention, despite protest by Erdoğan. The trial against the two began one month later. On 6 May 2016, Dündar was found guilty of the publication of state secrets and sentenced to five years and 10 months in prison, while Gül received five years. Both have submitted appeals; thus, the judgement has not yet been finalised. Dündar is currently residing in Europe.

Following the attempted coup in Turkey, Dündar announced that he would not return to Turkey as long as the state of emergency was still in place. A condition of “lawlessness” had prevailed since the coup attempt, he said, and he no longer had any trust in the Turkish justice system. Shortly before Dündar and Gül’s imprisonment, Reporters Without Borders awarded Cumhuriyet its Prize for Press Freedom in the “Media” category, and launched an international campaign on behalf of the two persecuted journalists.

Dündar will speak with BILD publisher Kai Diekmann on the current state of affairs in Turkey, the role and responsibility of Europe and Germany, and the likely course of future events in Turkey.

The Special Talk will take place within the framework of the M100 Sanssouci Colloquium, an international media conference welcoming chief and senior editors, publicists, politicians, and historians from all over Europe to Potsdam (Germany) on 15 September to address the topic “War or Peace”.

Some 70 participants will gather in the Orangery of Sanssouci to discuss the return of geopolitical strategies, a Europe sliding into disintegration, the growing radicalisation of Western, Middle Eastern and other societies, as well as the role and responsibility of the media in these developments.

The conference will be opened by renowned historian Prof. Dan Diner Ph.D., currently Professor of Modern History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the former Director of the Simon Dubnow Institute for Jewish History and Culture at the University of Leipzig from 1999 to 2014.

At the conclusion of the conference, Italian author and journalist Roberto Saviano will be recognised with this year’s M100 Media Award. Since publication of his book Gomorrah, the 36-year-old Saviano and his family have been threatened by the mafia. Now under police protection, he is living an underground life, sharing the fate of an increasing number of journalists in Europe and worldwide who have been threatened, imprisoned, tortured or killed because of their work. The laudation will be hold by ZEIT Editor-in-Chief Giovanni di Lorenzo.

This year's co-operation partners of the #M100YEJ are amazing: the investigative networks CORRECT!V, Netzwerk Recherche, ICIJ and OCCRP.

CORRECT!V, the first nonprofit investigative newsroom in the German-speaking world, wants to give citizens access to information. CORRECT!V releases its reports in English, German and Russian languages via its web site to media outlets throughout Europe and around the globe. Workshop trainer Daniel Drepper is co-founder and senior reporter of CORRECT!V. Six years ago, he has been taken part at the M100 YEJ 2010.

Netzwerk Recherche is a German based association of journalists, which wants to enhance the quality of media coverage through research, convey research techniques to the younger generation and foster investigative journalism. YEJ workshop trainer Albrecht Ude focusses on internet censorship (e.g China). His main aspects are research, IT & communication security, civil rights in times of the erosion of the rule of law, democracy and an open free society under the threat of increasing surveillance.

The Washington based International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), which includes more than 160 investigative journalists in over 65 countries who work together on issues such as cross-border crime, corruption, and the accountability of power. The network were involved in the revealing of the Panama Papers. Workshop trainer is the Romanian investigative journalist and co-founder of the Romanian Centre for Investigative Journalism (CRJI), Stefan Candea.

The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) is a consortium of investigative centers, media and journalists operating in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, Central Asia and Central America. Founded in 2006, it is the only full-time investigative reporting organization that specializes in organized crime and corruption. Co-founder and multiple award winner Paul Radu will tell the participants of M100 YEJ about contributions to Panama Papers and how organized crime works.

Postdam, August 19, 2016. Just four weeks before the M100 Sanssouci Colloquium (#M100SC) under the topic “War or Peace” it’s time to introduce the moderators of the three sessions: Dr Leonard Novy, Ali Aslan and Constantin Schreiber.

Leonard Novy moderates Session I: "All for None, and None for All? Europe between autocratic Challenges and Disintegration", which deals with European domestic policy, the state of democracy in Europe and the question how the EU could reform. He is co-director of the Institute of Media and Communications Policy, Cologne, co-publisher of the German blog carta.info and has published extensively on issues pertaining to international politics, media and political communication as well as the influence of the Internet on politics and media.

In Session II, "In the Face of Crisis: The EU’s Foreign Policy", the debate focusses on European foreign policy and the view from outside. The discussion is moderated by TV moderator, journalist and politic scientist Ali Aslan. He has worked for global news networks such as CNN, ABC News, Channel News Asia and Deutsche Welle TV and hosts regularly political talk shows and discussions all over the world.

Session III highlights „Europe’s media and the information crisis” – role, responsibility and failures, but also what dangers do mounting limits on the press  in Europe present and how can they be countered? Moderator Constantin Schreiber is a news presenter, talkshow host and correspondent for German news network n-tv and RTL. He has become very well known as publisher of the book “1.000 Lashes” of the detained Saudi blogger Raif Badawi and as moderator of the video  broadcast “Marhaba – Ankommen in Deutschland” (“Marhaba - Arriving in Germany”, for which he was presented with the Grimme Award in March.
